Reluctant Reader Program

Marc Perella from Glasgow Middle School in Fairfax, VA found a way to motivate his eighth grade students to practice their reading fluency. They record picture books for a first grade class in a neighboring school using Livescribe Sound Stickers.

Marc developed a protocol for them to follow in order to be prepared to record the story. They must exhibit proficiency in word recognition, pacing, and intonation before placing a Sound Sticker on each page and recording with the smartpen. When the books are complete they are sent to the neighboring school with the smartpen for the younger students to enjoy.

Question: Do you have ideas on how to use the Livescribe smartpen during science labs?

Answer:
I set up 4 netbooks in my science lab. Students paused and played the following two pencasts as they worked on completing the lab and filling out a worksheet. The pencasts provided the lab instruction as well as the content for the lab worksheet. It freed me up to monitor the whole class as students with questions could just rewind the pencast. After students completed the lab they could review the link anytime from home.
